There are times when you want to connect the dot that appears above the letters i and j, and not have them free floating above the letter. It’s quick and easy to do in your Lightburn software.
So in this tutorial we’re going to be looking at how to join the dots on top of j’s and i’s so that they stay together when you’re cutting them, and I’m going to show you two different methods on how to do this depending on the look you want to achieve.
Watch the video below or scroll down for written instructions
Method 1
So once you have your word on the screen just click on it to select it, and then right click and select the option Convert to Path.
Now bear in mind that as we do this what’s going to happen is that it will no longer be editable as a word, so you won’t be able to change the text. It sort of becomes a shape. So you can see as you move it around on the screen it all comes out of place you can’t really edit it anymore as text.
So what we going to do is move the dots down so that they just overlap slightly on top of the j and the i as you can see in the image below.
Now all you need to do is click and drag from the right so that the whole word is highlighted and then select the WELD option from the left side menu.
Once you have clicked on the weld option, everything is joined together and you can move it around the screen without the letters coming apart.
Method 2
For the second method I’m going to come over to the RECTANGLE option from the left hand menu and I’m going to draw a little rectangle on the workspace.
I’ll just change the color to black because I want it to match the colour of the word. To do this click on the rectangle you just drew and select black from the colour chart at the bottom of the screen.
Now click the SELECT TOOL option and drag the rectangle over to the letter i.
I made it a little bit taller and rotated it slightly.
Once the first joining piece is in place then I’ll select command copy or do ctrl C or ctrl V depending on whether you’re on a Mac or a Windows computer so that I have a second rectangle which I will drag over to the letter j to join the dot to the letter.
I’m going to do the same thing I did before click and drag from the side to highlight everything and then click weld.
Now this may look a bit odd so some people don’t use this option. I personally don’t like it as much as the first option, but sometimes you have to use this method, depending on the text you’ve used.
Making it look better…
You can also move the dots down, so let’s take a look at that option.
Just as we did with the previous version we click on the text, right click and select Convert to Path.
Now we can move the dots down slightly so they don’t look so odd, and then we make the rectangles as before. This time we will just duplicate this one we have on the screen so that we have two of them.
Drag one of the rectangles over to the i as we did previously.
Now you may experience some issues lining this up, as sometimes the shape sort of wants to click into place making it difficult to move to where you want it.
What you can do if you experience this is click on the SETTINGS option at the top menu.
You can see how you’ve got some Snapping Options which you can uncheck. This makes it a little easier to move the shapes around.
Once again just highlight everything from the rightclick the Weld Option;
I think that looks a better when the dots are further down. But like I always say, the option is yours and what you like. Sometimes it will depend on the text.
